Summary
of Hearing Loss Treatment
(July 31, 2000
– February 12, 2001)
David had suffered
from a hearing loss for seven months when he came to see me for
the first time on July 31, 2000, in the Faculty Clinic at Northwest
University of Health Science (NWUHS).
The patient
stated that he had head cold in November 1999. One month later,
he noticed that his hearing from his left ear decreased. He had
taken diuretic medicine and prednisone prescribed by his doctor,
which helped for only a short period of time.
Initial
Exam:
During his first visit, he looked slim with pale-grayish complexion.
His left hearing was 40-50% that of the right, with high pitching
tinnitus. There was neither pressure in the ear nor on the jaw;
neither headache nor dizziness. He had slight constipation and one
to two bowel movements per day with formed stool. He also had frequent
urination due to diuretic medicine and had to go to bathroom one
to two times in the evening but with no complaint about his sleep.
HPT, Diabetes, and Cardiovascular disorders were denied by the patient.
His tongue was enlarged with lavender color with thick coating.
His pulse was deep.
Treatment
Stages:
He was first treated with modified Jin Gui Sheng Qi Wan herbal powder
combined with acupuncture. No immediate improvement was observed
with the first treatment.
In the second
treatment, in additional to acupuncture, herbal formula was changed
to modified Lui Wei Di Huang Tang suing raw herbals. Patient experienced
some improvement in hearing. The same treatment was repeated for
five sessions with slow recovery.
To enhance the
recovery, herbal formula was modified once again by using Yi Qi
Cong Ming Tang for four sessions. This time acupuncture treatment
was focused on Gall Bladder and San Jiao aimed to regulate water
flow and unblock stagnation. In the meantime, patient also received
Qi Gong therapy and started physical exercise. With three weeks
of continuous treatment, patient stated that his hearing improved
significantly.
The following
nine treatments were based on strengthen the patient’s spleen
and resolve phlegm using modified Ban Xia Tian Ma Bai Zhu Tang.
Patient had been fully recovered since.
